The Journey to Accountable Care Delivery:  Embracing the New Economics of Health Care Reform

Accountable care organizations (ACOs) are today’s hot topic in the health industry.  Blessed by the passage of the health care reform bill, ACOs are being touted as the business and care delivery model required for success as the industry moves away from  ‘pay for volume’ and towards a ‘pay for value’ market. The net desired effect is to spend fewer dollars on health care in the near term, and to create a new economic model that changes long-term expenditure trends.

New payment realities will demand that hospitals and physicians work collaboratively toward a new economic model that emphasizes longitudinal management of care and costs as opposed to episodic treatments of acutely ill patients.  These changes will require new models for coordinating and managing care, and will challenge systems to develop a new set of competencies in order to compete. How systems evolve their business and clinical strategies in response to this, will likely determine which providers survive and thrive, and which ones struggle or exit the market.

In this Innovator’s Studio work session, we’ll examine the facts and the fads of ACOs – and explore the models, partnerships, technologies and innovations that will transform America’s health systems.

Catalysts for this session include:

  • Martin Hickey, MD, Chief Accountable Care Officer, Alegent Health
  • Arthur DeTore, MD, MBA, EVP, Strategic Direction and Business Development, Parkview Health
  • Stuart Baker, MD, President/COO, Navvis & Company

What:

The Innovator's Studio for Chief Strategy Officers (CSO) is designed to assist hospital and health system executives seeking to understand the evolution and emergence of markets in the health industry, and the evolving role of the CSO in healthcare enterprises. They desire to create a clear, compelling vision for the future, and design innovative and transformational strategies to position and ready their organizations for success. These executives are focused on setting market-leading strategic direction; leading organizational transformation under healthcare reform; mapping out critical business initiatives that make the market act differently; and driving and supporting the successful execution of the strategy in an integrated fashion with physicians, finance and operations.

Using a structured framework within a highly-creative, collaborative environment, clients will:

  • Define innovative market opportunities to drive revenue growth
  • Explore the role of chief strategy officer as "influential advisor" to the health system
  • Address strategic alignment issues
  • Create sustainable physician alignment and understand its impact on brand
  • Pioneer new care delivery models
  • Create new products and ventures
  • Examine creative employer and other strategic growth opportunities
  • Interact with and learn from some of the country's top in and out-of-industry chief strategists!
