Physician Executive Management Center Changes Name

August 10, 2010 (St. Louis, Missouri) – Physician Executive Management Center (Tampa, Florida) has changed its name to Physician Executive Leadership Center (PELC).

Physician Executive Leadership Center is the nation’s only executive search firm focused solely on the recruitment and placement of physicians in executive leadership positions.  The company was founded in 1983, originally as a joint venture with the American College of Physician Executives, and later became an independent firm. In March 2010, PELC joined St. Louis-based Navvis & Company, a leading consultancy in the health services industry.

The name change marks an important milestone in PELC’s continued evolution.  As the healthcare industry undergoes significant change and transformation driven by political and economic reforms, the demands of an aging population, and advances in medical science and technology, physician leaders are even more critical to developing, driving and leading transformation strategies to position health systems for success. Recent studies estimate that 20% of new hires for hospital CEO leadership roles are filled by physician executives.  Of the top 14 “honor roll” hospitals listed in the July 2010 US News and World Report, eleven are led by physicians.

“There is increasing interest by healthcare organizations across the US in appointing physicians to all levels of executive and clinical leadership- from CEO to COO/EVP to service line chiefs and chairs,” said Jennifer Grebenschikoff, president of PELC.  “The word ‘leadership’ better represents the skills, expectations and roles that physicians play in today’s health care systems.”

“Successful physician leaders are able to cross the chasm between the culture of medicine and the culture of management,” said Stuart Baker, MD, and president and chief operating officer for Navvis & Company, the parent organization of Physician Executive Leadership Center.  “Health systems addressing care transformation, physician alignment, clinical quality, safety, and business performance improvement are increasingly seeking qualified physician leaders for C suite, clinical operations and physician enterprise positions.”
PELC’s new name also represents the firm’s integration with Navvis & Company, and symbolizes the synergistic benefits that the partnership brings to healthcare clients. “Our mutual goal,” says Grebenschikoff, “is to help health leaders create high performing, accountable health systems and physician organizations.”

Chief Strategy Officers Meet to Address Future of Health Care Systems

April 20, 2010 (St. Louis, Missouri) – Chief strategy officers from more than twenty health systems across the U.S. will convene at the Innovator’s Studio May 3 -4, 2010 in Chicago, Illinois to address the implications of health care reform and other emerging market forces on health system design.  The Innovator’s Studio was founded in 2007 by Navvis & Company to provide a unique invitational forum where health executives work collaboratively to foster innovations in health system strategy, leadership and performance.

“The first significant overhaul of our nation’s health care system since the introduction of Medicare in the mid-1960s, has health systems deliberating the impact of market and government-led reform initiatives on financing, quality, access, growth and long term survival under the current prevailing business models,” said Karen Corrigan, chief strategy officer for Navvis & Company. “The degree of uncertainty is high, prompting some organizations to take a “wait and see” approach in addressing change.  This is a risky proposition at best.  The more proactive health systems are more likely to shape the environment in their favor.”

The May work session for health system chief strategy officers will focus on scenario planning as a method to help healthcare leaders make better decisions in the face of uncertainty. Traditional forecasting techniques fail to predict significant impact when change is turbulent and information limited; insights about the future and transformational ideas come from deep, informed strategic conversations among leaders regarding opportunities and possibilities in a future framed by a confluence of market forces including government-mandated reform, advances in science and technology, an aging population, a recovering economy and more.

“The breadth and depth of knowledge and experience represented by these health system senior strategy executives is significant,” said Corrigan.  “When they come together in a structured, collaborative and creative environment, the output is phenomenal.”

Guest catalysts for the May meeting of the Chief Strategy Officers’ Innovator’s Studio include Doug Pollei, vice president of Internet Strategy and Corporate Development for IKANO Communications, Inc. a portfolio of Insight Venture Partners NYC (recent investors in Twitter and Yelp); Martyn Howgill, founding executive director of The Institute for Health Technology Studies (InHealth), a Washington, DC-based non-profit foundation that serves as an objective and authoritative source for research, analysis and education about the social and economic impact of medical devices and diagnostics; Linda MacCracken, vice president of product management at Thomson Reuters, a leading source for business intelligence in the health, financial, legal, media and other industries; Saad Allawi, president of Navvis & Company’s Performance Transformation practice, which provides counsel, project design and execution support for organizational performance improvement and cost restructuring; and Betty Plevney, founder of Plevney and Company and founding member of the Headwaters Leadership Group, a collaborative of leading consultants in strategic and scenario planning, change processes and process redesign.

Navvis & Company Acquires Physician Executive Management Center

March 8, 2010 (St. Louis, Missouri) – Navvis & Company (St. Louis Missouri), a leading consultancy in the health services industry, announced today the acquisition of Tampa-based Physician Executive Management Center (PEMC).

Physician Executive Management Center is the nation’s only executive recruitment firm focused solely on the recruitment and placement of physicians in executive leadership positions.  The company was founded in 1983, originally as a joint venture with the American College of Physician Executives, and later became an independent firm.

Its founding principals – Jennifer Grebenschikoff and David Kirschman – are widely respected experts on physician executive search, career counseling and compensation.  They also bring considerable experience in health care management, having served as executives in large physician organizations, health plans and health systems.

“The expertise and capabilities of Physician Executive Management Center will bring enormous value to Navvis & Company clients in addressing the increasing demand for executive physician leadership in health systems and hospitals,” said Michael Farris, Chairman and CEO of Navvis & Company.

Over the next five to ten years, the healthcare industry will undergo significant change and transformation driven by political and economic reforms, the demands of an aging population, and advances in medical science and technology. “Physician leaders are critical to developing, driving and leading transformation strategies to position health systems for success in the complex and ever-changing health industry,” said Stuart Baker, MD, President and COO of Navvis & Company.

“Health systems addressing care transformation, physician alignment, clinical quality, safety and business performance improvement are increasingly seeking qualified physician leaders for C suite, clinical operations and physician enterprise positions,” said PEMC’s Jennifer Grebenschikoff.  “We believe our expertise in this area is significantly aligned to the strategy, leadership and performance counsel that Navvis & Company provides to health care organizations.”

St. Louis-based Navvis & Company provides consulting and professional services to health systems, hospitals and physician organizations seeking to create and sustain competitive advantage.  The origin of the firm can be traced to the mid 1980s when The Farris Group was founded to support hospitals in the acquisition and management of physician practices.

Over the years, Navvis & Company has evolved into a diversified professional services group with expertise in strategy aimed at building successful health care systems, forging strong physician alliances, optimizing organizational performance and driving bottom line results. Navvis acquired The Strategy Group (Norfolk, Virginia) in 2008 to expand its capabilities in corporate strategy, health system development and brand leadership; and in 2009 recruited performance expert Saad Allawi to lead development of the firm’s Performance Transformation consultancy.  That same year, it spun off VisDev Ventures, the company’s facilities development division.

In addition to its St. Louis headquarters, Navvis & Company operates offices in Orlando, Florida, Norfolk, Virginia, and now in Tampa, Florida where Physician Executive Management Center will retain operations.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
